Only two real haunted houses made the list. Then it gets weird. 13 Sinister Souls Haunted House is right in town, 20 rooms of gore built around a legend about an evil book bound in human skin. It's recommended for 10 and up. Field of Screams Kansas out in Maize adds Clown Town in 3D and a couple of escape games. Figure 1.5 to 2 hours there, and show up right at your ticket time. Early arrivals can't park, and late ones might not get in.
For little kids, Broomsticks and Biplanes on Oct 18 is trick-or-treating among historic aircraft at the Kansas Aviation Museum, $5 a person (3 and under get in free). Out in Hutchinson, Little Train of Horror runs a Haunted Zoo night Oct 23 to 25 with local student actors, as a fundraiser for the zoo and the high school theater club. Plan ahead, though: online tickets close at 5 p.m. the day of. There's also a flashlight tour through a darkened museum for teens. Wichita is a little odd in October, and I mean that as a compliment.
