During the season it runs Festival Fright Nights at Winchester Mystery House, with 13 attractions across four zones, haunted houses inside the mansion and a seated Harry Houdini séance show. Tickets are online only. If you just want the house itself, the regular tours cover 110 of its 160 rooms in about an hour.
For a straight haunted house, Fear Overload Scream Park in Newark is the scariest-rated pick, with two indoor houses. They don't recommend it under 12, and they're strict about shoes: no heels or sandals. Closer in, The Bernal Scream: Forbidden Symphony is a 10,000-square-foot walk-through in San Jose. Money tip: pay cash at the booth and you skip the online processing fees. If you've got kids, Candle Lighters Ghost House in Fremont is $5 and offers a lights-on tour where the room designers show you how the effects work.
