Giant scream parks aren't really the Bay Area thing, at least not on this list. What you get instead is weirder. The Black Cat Hotel is a live theater walk-through where a hotel run by vampires checks you in and moves you room by room for about an hour. Tickets start at $39. The USS Haunted Hornet puts a haunt on a historic aircraft carrier in Alameda, so expect tight passageways and steep ladders. It's 13 and up with timed entry, so book ahead.
Ghost tours are where this list piles up, and I'd start with San Francisco Ghost Hunt Walking Tour. It bills itself as the city's longest-running, and they say there's nothing in it that's inappropriate for kids. Another tour in the Haight hands you ghost-hunting gear and ends at a haunted pub (bring a jacket, it's the fog belt). For families who want zero screaming, Nightfall at Filoli in Woodside is the big one, with thousands of pumpkins, glowing jack-o'-lanterns along a redwood trail and a witches' village. Plan on two hours or more.
