Sacramento Scream Park runs four back to back, from a cursed swamp to a haunted school dance, and most people spend 90 minutes to two hours there. Heartstoppers Haunted House in Rancho Cordova does the same trick with four connected mazes across three stories. Plan ahead, though: Heartstoppers sells tickets online only, by time slot, so you can't just show up. Corbett's House of Horror in Davis spreads out over 15 acres of farmland and adds a ride where you shoot zombies with paintball guns from the back of a pickup. That part usually sells out, so get there early.
The history pick is The Haunt at Preston Castle in Ione, a walkthrough inside an old reform school, running Oct 9 to 24. For something lighter, the city's history museum runs ghost tours about real, bizarre deaths from Sacramento's past, with some humor mixed in. With younger kids, Golfland Fright Nights in Roseville has a Halloween mini golf course for all ages (the haunted house there is 13+).
