Haunted houses in Reno

Fun fact: nothing on this list is actually in Reno. The big one is Dark Prison Haunted House, 26 miles away in Carson City, inside a real historic cell block at the Nevada State Prison. It's three separate haunts with over 60 live actors, and there's a bar in the old muster room. General admission is $34.95. Plan ahead, though: time slots sell out, and kids under 5 aren't allowed at all. More curious than brave? Behind the Screams is a one-hour, lights-on tour of the same sets, led by the artists who built them.

For ghosts, head to Virginia City. Bats in the Belfry Ghost Tours is an hour-long outdoor walk for $20, and you pay cash at check-in. The Haunted Ghost Tour at the Gold Hill Hotel goes further, with ghost hunting tools and a tour of hotel rooms they say are haunted.
