Old buildings do a lot of the work in Philadelphia. Fright Factory sits inside a 120-plus-year-old South Philly warehouse, and Lincoln Mill Haunted House puts more than 45 actors in a basement chamber under a historic textile mill. Then there's Pennhurst Asylum, about 26 miles out in Spring City, with four separate attractions and actors who may touch you. Be warned: they'll let kids as young as 10 in, but they don't recommend it. Plan ahead, too. You have to print Pennhurst tickets at home before you go.
If you'd rather hear about ghosts than get grabbed by one, I'd go with Philly Ghosts Haunted Tours, which walks Old City after dark starting at $25. Across the river in Haddon Township, New Jersey, a theater runs a Rocky Horror screening with a ghost hunt afterward. That's a combo. FYI: Lincoln Mill is $38 for general admission, and they say Thursdays and Sundays are the less crowded nights. For younger kids the list is pretty thin. The free farmstead lore night in Hatboro on Oct 24 is the gentlest thing here.
