A former tuberculosis sanatorium is about as on-the-nose as a haunt gets, and that's exactly what Waverly Hills Sanatorium Haunted House is. Tickets are $20, and they recommend 13 and up. Heads up: they say Google Maps can send you the wrong way, so use Waze or Apple Maps and head for Gate A. Downtown, The Devil's Attic Haunted Attraction is the intense indoor pick, with a $52 front-of-line pass you can only buy at the booth.

Outdoors, Grim Trails Haunted Attraction runs a fairy-tale and folklore trail across 20 acres in EP Tom Sawyer State Park. They don't recommend it for kids under 10. And then there's the weird one. A free cryptid festival at Pope Lick Park, Oct 15 to 18, is built around the local Goatman legend, with seminars, horror movies, a haunted trail and a petting zoo of horned animals. Yes, really. There's nothing on this list aimed at little kids, and even the walking tours are 12 and up. I'd save Louisville for a grown-up night.
