One of the haunts here is inside a real abandoned asylum. That's Eloise Asylum: Haunted Attraction in Westland, 54,000 square feet with more than 120 staff and scare actors. Plan on 35 to 40 minutes inside. Be warned: you have to be on-site before the box office closes, even though the haunt stays open later. Erebus Haunted Attraction in Pontiac is the other heavy hitter, with four floors and a half-mile path, and it's not recommended for kids under 13.
Want a full night out? Scarefest Scream Park in Lenox has a mile-long hayride, a haunted castle, a forest trail and a maze, and they suggest giving it at least three hours. Friday and Saturday nights in October often sell out, so buy online. For something gentler, The Haunted Garage in Grosse Pointe Farms is a home haunt fundraiser with donuts and cider. Little ones can carry a 'no-scare' blinky light so the monsters back off. Smart.
