Ghost tours win here, and it's not close. Nine of the 13 spots on this list are tours, and you can take them on foot, in a horse-drawn carriage or bar to bar. The Charleston Haunted Jail Tour actually goes inside the Old City Jail, with stories running from 19th-century pirates to the legend of Lavinia Fisher. It's 10 and up, starting at $39. Want it free? There's a night of campfire ghost stories on the beach at Isle of Palms on Oct 16.

For real scares, Southern Screams Haunted House sits at Holy City Brewing in North Charleston and opens with a pre-show where the monsters come out into the crowd. There's also a 50-room time-travel walkthrough nearby that only takes online bookings. Boone Hall Fright Nights in Mt. Pleasant runs Oct 23 to 30, indoors and air-conditioned (13 and up). The odd one is Halloween in the Swamp in Moncks Corner, where a haunted boat ride drops you off at a haunted trail in the woods. Plan ahead, though: they don't sell tickets at the gate.
