Half of this list is in Canada. Niagara Falls, Ontario, to be exact. The one I'd brace for over there is Nightmares Fear Factory, a pitch-black maze in a former coffin factory where you follow a trail of red lights and can yell a safe word to get out. Apparently more than 200,000 people have chickened out. Groups max out at six, and they never pair you with strangers. Kids under 6 can't go in.

Back on the US side, Frightworld America's Screampark in Buffalo has five haunted houses under one roof and runs through Nov 7. Plan ahead, though: the box office is cash only, but buying there skips the online fees (there's an ATM). For kids, Creepy Castle over in Niagara Falls is a laser-blaster dark ride, $5.99 Canadian for ages 3 to 12. For history, Ghosts of the Garrison at Old Fort Niagara is a candlelit, self-guided night on Oct 16 and 17. It's ghost lore, not a haunted house.
